Overbearing Mom Costs Son A Job After Tagging Along For The Interview
We all have either had or known someone who has had an overbearing parent: the type who's a little too involved in their life, a little too eager to help, and a little too protective of their child.
It can be stifling for a kid for sure, but sometimes it can go even further to disrupt their own life.
One Person Met Such A Parent
Reddit user apartmentroublee took to the platform to share their experience with an overbearing mom they had to interact with.
As a hiring manager for a tech company, it all started with a job opening.
They Were Hiring Interns
During the summer, it's not uncommon for college students to seek out internships to get some hands-on experience in their field of interest.
The tech company the storyteller was working for was hiring a few interns.
One Lucky Kid Got An Interview
One internship applicant, who was 19 years old and just wrapping up his freshman year of college, was lucky enough to get an interview.
Since it was in the midst of a pandemic, the interview was taking place over Zoom.
Things Started Off Okay, But Quickly Went Downhill
The storyteller explained that he was only one or two minutes into the interview and was still just introducing himself to the student when his mom popped into the frame.
Rather than just walking past, she started to participate.
She Got Way Too Involved
The mother introduced herself and immediately started to talk about her son's work ethic.
Of course, a work ethic is a good thing, but the interviewer gently explained that they were looking to hear more from the student himself.
She Didn't Take The Hint Though
Even though the interviewer made it clear that the mother shouldn't be involved, she kept popping her head back in.
She went as far as to interrupt her own son and start answering the questions for him.
The Interviewer Had Enough Of It
The interviewer explained that they went on to ask the student a couple more technical questions, which he answered pretty well.
However, with all the mother's antics, they ended up cutting the interview short.
It Wasn't The Last They Heard From Her
About a month after the interview, the hiring manager received an email from the mother.
She asked about her son's application and seemed aggravated about the fact he hadn't received an acceptance or rejection message.
They Tried To Be Kind
He responded to the email saying that the HR policy was not to reveal application information to anyone but the actual applicant.
Later on, the team finally sent the rejection email to her son.
That Still Wasn't The Last Of Her
She ended up calling the hiring manager demanding answers.
He tried to explain that he couldn't tell her details about the application, but he would be more than willing to give feedback directly to her son.
They Did, However, Talk About Her Influence
The hiring manager explained, "I could say that regardless of his performance, her presence in the interview took him out of consideration for the position."
"We were looking for an independent and self-driven person for the position, and for that reason, it is important to see an applicant speak for themselves."
She Was Not Happy With That Response
The mother proceeded to cuss out the hiring manager, eventually leading to them hanging up on her.
The hiring manager reached out to people on Reddit to ask if they had done something wrong in the process.
People Were On The Side Of The Hiring Manager
Of course, they really sympathized with the son who lost an opportunity because of his mother, but most people agreed that there was no way to really take a candidate seriously if their parent hijacked the interview.
Others who had similar experiences as the son shared how frustrating it can be to have an overbearing parent, but hoped that this situation would teach the mother a lesson to back off the future.
