John Legend And Kelly Clarkson Update The Lyrics To ‘Baby It’s Cold Outside’
When it comes to Christmas music, "Baby It's Cold Outside" is one of the most iconic classics there is. However, last year following the #MeToo movement many people gave the lyrics to the song a second look and realized that it could be seen as a bit problematic. It's because of this that John Legend and Kelly Clarkson have teamed up to give the song an update more appropriate for today's society.
The two artists recorded a remake of the 1944 classic because of the lyrics in the original. Lines like "I ought to say no, no, no, sir (Mind if move in closer?)" and "Say, what's in this drink?" were viewed as ignoring consent. Many radio stations across the country banned the song from their library last year after people took issue with the original lyrics.
Legend previewed the song's lyrics with Vanity Fair magazine. The updated lyrics include one verse that features these lyrics:
Clarkson: "What will my friends think..." Legend: "I think they should rejoice" Clarkson: "...if I have one more drink?" Legend: "It's your body, and your choice."
The song will appear on the deluxe release of his "A Legendary Christmas" album which is due on November 8th.
