Couple Has “Super Twins” Born On The Same Day But Conceived 3 Weeks Apart
Finding out that they're going to be having a child is something that many couples look forward to. Rebecca Roberts and Rhys Weaver were no exception.
When they found out they were pregnant, they were thrilled at the idea of becoming parents to their first child. They weren't, however, expecting to find out they were having not one but two babies—and that those babies weren't conceived at the same time?
A Growing Family
Rebecca and Rhys found out that Rebecca was pregnant in 2020 after the couple had been undergoing fertility treatments.
The U.K. couple had been trying to have a baby for years, which led them to seek out fertility treatments in the first place.
The Treatment Did Its Job
The fertility treatments did what they were supposed to, helping Rebecca to get pregnant with the couple's first child.
Rebecca and Rhys found out they were going to be parents in February 2020. They went for a scan a few weeks later and received some unexpected news.
It's Twins!!
Rebecca and Rhys found out at their 12-week scan that they were going to be having not one, but two babies!
The really surprising part, though, was that the second baby wasn't there at the 7-week or 10-week scans the couple had previously been to.
Superfetation Leads To Super Twins
The doctors determined that it was a case of a superfetation pregnancy. It's a rare occurrence where a second pregnancy happens while already pregnant with one baby.
The two babies Rebecca was growing were conceived three weeks apart, meaning they would be "super twins" when born.
How Does This Happen?
Normally when a woman is pregnant, the physical and hormonal effects on her body would stop the ovulation process so that a woman isn't able to be pregnant a second time.
In cases of superfetation, the ovulation process still occurred, causing two separate embryos to be implanted at different times. According to Rebecca's Instagram, there are only 14 cases in the world.
Worried About The Second Baby
The condition is rare, and while exciting for the couple, they were also told that the second baby was at risk.
There was a chance that the younger child would not be able to survive for the entire pregnancy due to the rarity of the situation, and because she was significantly smaller than her brother.
Inducing At 33 Weeks
Rebecca and Robert welcomed two babies into the world at 33 weeks.
Their son Noah was born at 4 lbs 10 oz, and their daughter Rosalie came into the world just two minutes later, weighing in at 2 lbs 7 oz.
They're Technically Twins
Since the babies were born on the same day, they count as twins even though they were conceived a few weeks apart.
Their mother says she thinks of them as twins because she carried them at the same time and they were born together.
An Extended Hospital Stay
It's common for twins to be born before they're full-term, but since both babies were so small they were monitored in the NICU after their birth.
After three weeks Noah was able to go home with his parents, but his sister Rosalie was in intensive care for three months.
Happy, Healthy Super Twins
The super twins are coming up on 7 months old and are progressing well!
Rosalie is still noticeably smaller than her brother Noah but her parents said she's a trooper.
They've Amassed A Following
Considering what a rare occurrence superfetation is, Noah and Rosalie have become quite the little Instagram stars.
The babies, @roberts.supertwins, have more than 66K followers rooting for them, along with Rebecca and Rhys.
