Boyfriend Makes Woman Cook Dinner On Her Birthday For His Narcissistic Mother
Birthdays are that one day a year where we want to feel special and celebrated. We may want to ignore the number of candles on the cake, but we still want to feel like we matter.
Reddit user ElectronicCoconut558 was excited to spend her birthday with her boyfriend on his day off. Instead, he invited his mother-in-law for dinner without warning. Plus, he then asked his girlfriend to cook for her.
The Boyfriend Is Away For Work Often
The boyfriend is gone quite often for work. For his girlfriend's birthday, he seemed to have made it a point to come in the day before.
Plus, he was off on the actual day to be able to spend it with her.
He Surprised Her The Night Before Her Birthday
The night before her birthday he surprised her with some gifts and a card.
"It had a very heartfelt message written inside. On the back, it said 'Oh wait, there’s more, you’re just going to have to wait."
Her Birthday Was On April Fools
Keep in mind, her birthday was on April fools day, so she was used to having multiple people play pranks on her. Her boyfriend even had promised he'd prank her one year.
However, this time, she truly felt like he had a nice surprise planned for the day.
On Her Birthday, He Asks About A Recipe
They started the day by going paddleboarding. "On our way back, he asks me about a recipe I often cook. Ok, cool. I say I can pick up a few ingredients I need and I'm thinking it’s a request for another day."
Little did she know, he had motive for asking.
He Tells Her His Mother Is Feeling Down
The boyfriend then explained that his mother had been feeling down. She had contacted him the night before asking for support.
"I said I totally feel for her, I can do lunch or spend some time with her on my day off since he's gone pretty often..."
He Asks Her To Cook Dinner For His Mother That Night
What the girlfriend didn't realize is that her mother-in-law was looking for immediate support. It was then that he asked if she would make her dinner that night. The girlfriend felt upset.
"He could have told me about this last night, and I probably would have been more understanding."
These Are The Reasons The Girlfriend Was Upset
The worst part was that he didn't end up doing anything special for her birthday to make up for it. "Nothing, nada, zilch after making it seem like he had something planned."
The girlfriend explains she would've been happy to cook for her mother-in-law any other day, but she didn't want her day ruined listening to a sad story.
She Says The Mother Is Narcissistic
The girlfriend didn't understand what the rush was to cheer up her boyfriend's mother. She highlights that the mother doesn't suffer from depression or anything that requires immediate attention.
She does, however, say that that mother is narcissistic.
The Internet Agreed That He Should've At Least Asked First
Commentators seemed aligned that if the boyfriend is that upset for his mother, he should be the one to host her. Or, at least on a day that's not his girlfriend's birthday.
At the very least, he should've checked with her in advance so they're both on the same page.
They Say He's A "Mommy's Boy"
Some suggest that the mother could be upset over the girlfriend getting all the attention on her birthday and causing this issue on purpose. This can happen with overprotective mothers.
It also shows that the boyfriend could be a bit of a "momma's boy" for prioritizing her feeling over his girlfriend's.
