Dads In Delivery Rooms Who Could Not Keep It Together (But Can Laugh About It Now)
There's only one real certainty when it comes to delivering a baby and that is that nothing is certain. Meaning that regardless of how much reading, planning, and preparing is done beforehand, when it's actually time to deliver the baby, all bets are off.
Suddenly all that matters is keeping mom and baby safe as the labor unfolds. As it turns out, every now and then even dads need some support in the delivery room. Nurses, midwives, and parents online are sharing hilarious and relatable stories about the dads who made childbirth experiences extra memorable and we can't help but laugh.
"You Just Had To Make It About You"
A Twitter user who goes by "theMidwife" shared a funny story about how her patient's boyfriend passed out while she was giving birth.
The mom's hilarious response to her boyfriend earned the tweet over half a million likes and inspired hundreds of people to respond with their best "dad in delivery room" stories.
Mom And Baby Doing Well, Dad Not So Much
In response, @uglysketch shared some pictures and said: "Some of my favorite photos are of dads passing out during labor it always kills me."
One hilarious selfie shows a mom after giving birth while three nurses tend to her husband who is still lying on the floor. The nurses even bring the new baby to meet the dad before he's ready to stand.
Dad Had To Be Wheeled To Another Unit To Get Staples In His Head
When Twitter user @Chicquie5 shared that her dad nearly passed out when she was born, another user had a similar story to tell.
Her dad passed out and managed to hit his head on the way down, resulting in another medical emergency. He was swiftly wheeled to another unit to get staples in his head while his wife kept on pushing.
One Dad Thought He Was Having A Heart Attack
One father-to-be left the hospital on a mission to bring his wife back some of her things. Unfortunately, while he was out he had his first-ever panic attack and mistook it for a heart attack.
He ended up getting rushed to the emergency room only to be admitted and treated on the floor immediately below his wife in labor.
When Dad Is Much More Stressed Out Than Mom In The Delivery Room
In a tweet response that got over 18k likes, @VanaahPopsh_t said it was the same experience when she gave birth. She said her partner kept squeezing her hand even harder than she was squeezing his.
Jokingly, she said, "You wanna push for me too?" And he straight-up said he could try. She does not seem to have taken kindly to his sarcasm.
"I Cried More Than My Son When He Came Out"
This dad was definitely feeling all the emotions in the delivery room. He said he didn't pass out, but he did have a different problem.
He said: "I cried more than my son when he came out and he was looking up at me like 'big dawg you good?'"
Dads Passing Out Is Not Uncommon
A father named Trevor said that he fainted while his wife was being given the epidural and nearly pulled her off the bed as the needle was being inserted. The totally cringe moment was made worse when he got her pillow because it was the only one in the room.
Another dad admitted he had the same thing happen to him when his wife was having the same procedure. He mused, "Why I decided to watch the needle go in? I have no clue."
Nurses And Doctors Have Learned How To Help Dads Deal With Fainting
In response to the father who nearly took out his wife's epidural, some users were judgmental and snarky (it is Twitter after all). They told the father he shouldn't be bragging about the incident, even though the wife is fine now and he wasn't exactly bragging.
One woman responded and said that she didn't understand why people were being so judgmental. She explained how her fiancé was made to sit in front of her for the epidural procedure for that exact reason. One nurse said that "it happens all the time."
Dads Eating At Inappropriate Times
Somehow, countless women's pregnancy stories involve their partner eating something at an inappropriate time. Whether it's in the delivery room, in front of a hangry pregnant lady who's not allowed to have any, or in the car on the way to the hospital, some dads can't help but try to sneak a snack.
This woman's husband was clear that his wife and her body were not something to be grossed out by.
The Dad Who Skipped Science Class
A Reddit user shared how her dad was in for the shock of his life when he saw her for the first time.
She said that he didn't know that babies are usually born "face down" and when she finally came out her father screamed, "OH MY GOD SHE DOESN'T HAVE A FACE!" Another reason why it's important that men are also exposed to women's health studies in school.
"Pregnancy Is Magical!!!!" Says The Guy Without A Vagina
Another mom said that her husband had the courage to say "pregnancy is magical" and suggest having three more children.
She was immediately reminded about the time he was "chowing on chips" while she was "in labor screaming." It's always some guy named Jake.
A Satanic Voice Came Out Of His Wife And It Wanted New Ice Chips
My own father told me that my mom became a "poltergeist" when it was time to push us kids out.
So this father's story seems credible when he says that his wife used a "satanic voice" to tell him to "get better ice chips." Like a good man, he obeyed without asking questions.
Husband Trying To Be Comforting Accidentally Waterboards His Wife
@TheKateMcK tweeted back explaining how her sister's first birthing experience went. She said: "The midwife showed her husband how to squeeze out a cloth and cool her face."
Apparently when the midwife had her back turned "he threw the soaking cloth right over her face!" She continued that her sister started screaming, "Get that useless f***** out he's waterboarding me!" We love a dramatic mama.
The Dad Who Needed A Nurse To Go Get Him A Sprite
A Twitter user named @DesireyAlmaguer said her partner "Ronnie" almost passed out while she was giving birth.
He had to get one of her two nurses to go get him a Sprite mid-labor.
"It's Showtime And I'm Not A Very Good Catcher"
Reddit user Hereibe shared how "no one was responding to the call button" in the hospital room when their mom was in labor. Angrily, she yelled "DO SOMETHING, HONEY!!" at her husband.
This dad saw his time to shine and "ran out into the hallway and screamed at the top of his lungs: 'IT'S SHOWTIME AND I'M NOT A VERY GOOD CATCHER!'"
There Is No Time Like The Present—For Washing Machines
One user, who goes by Effy, remembered doing the only thing he knew how to do: "making jokes" and thinking he was helping. Thankfully his baby momma was too distracted to smack him.
In response, user @Thorpysays recalled arranging the delivery of a new washing machine while his wife delivered their second. Sometimes you've gotta take the call, I guess.
Stern Nurses Have Been Putting Dads Where They Need To Be For Years
This father shared the story of his attempt to support his wife as she was in labor.
He said "a very stern nurse" sat him down and told him not to move, because "they made it clear I wasn't allowed to become a 3rd patient in that room. Lol." Some of those dads from other stories could have used that nurse!
Roadside Delivery With A Side Of Dad Jokes
Redditor nomofica said that they are an EMT who was called to a side-of-the-road birth.
They had a seriously hard time containing themselves when the woman in labor shouted "F*** ME!!!" during a particularly difficult contraction, and her husband "casually replied, 'That's how we got into this mess, dammit!'"
The Afterbirth Ain't Pretty No Matter How You Look At It
Redditor GoThirdParty said that they had a few funny stories to share because they are an OB/GYN resident doctor.
The post continues: "After the baby delivers you still need to deliver the placenta. Usually, not a big deal but a lot of blood and fluid comes with it often. As she pushes it out her husband's face goes white and he says, 'Woah.' and has to sit down as he faints." Some things can't be unseen, and some dads just gotta faint.
For The Next Delivery, He Held Her Hands
So now mom is coming off of a who-knows-how-long labor, and has to deal with a sprained ankle too? Talk about adding insult to injury!
Looks like dad will be carrying around mom and baby.
He "Doesn't Remember It"
An epidural needle is no joke. They're pretty big, but he wasn't the one that had to have it inserted into his body!
The second-hand pain was too much for him to handle.
There's A Reason He's Her Ex
"I'll never forget when my ex was like 'I'm the most tired person in the room' I had literally just given birth and was struggling to walk after the epidural." —@ladyambrosia18
Maybe empathy is something for him to work on in his next relationship.
That'll Teach Him
Even if people were staring, it was probably to figure out why a woman was yelling in pain. Once they realized she was pregnant, all would have been forgiven.
Him though? He wasn't forgiven so easily.
Accidentally X-Rated Delivery Photos
Poor dad thought he was taking all these great photos that he'd be able to share with his family and probably even his child in future.
Those photos were most likely promptly deleted.
They Don't Come Out Looking Cute
If you've never seen a truly newborn baby, as in a baby that was born seconds ago, you wouldn't necessarily know what they look like once they're delivered.
This man learned the hard way that his baby girl wasn't cute right away.
