Father Sparks Debate Online By Criticising Outfits Worn By Popular Children’s “LOL Dolls”
Parenting is a never-ending job that brings new challenges every day, including choosing the best toys for children to play with.
Sometimes, even when parents have good intentions, they end up surprised by the products they brought home for their kids.
LOL Surprise Dolls Are In The Social Media Spotlight
One father has caused a bit of a debate online after he posted a video criticizing the outfits of the popular LOL Surprise! Dolls.
He feels that the outfits worn by the dolls are too "inappropriate" for his daughters to be exposed to.
The Father/Pastor Was Concerned About The Toys He Bought His Daughter
Patrick Johnson goes by the username @official.patrick.johnson on TikTok where he describes himself as a pastor and father.
His now-viral video shows him addressing the clothing design choices for popular children's toys called LOL Surprise! dolls.
He Approved Of The Disney Dolls Before Turning To The LOL Dolls
The clip begins with Johnson holding up his daughter's Disney dolls. First, Tiana from The Princess and the Frog, and then Anna from Frozen.
He describes Anna as a "wholesome little Barbie" before comparing the Disney dolls to his daughter's new dolls.
There's A Noticeable Difference Between The Doll's Styles
Johnson says "Y'all, I don’t know what we doing these days. Listen, my baby wants LOL dolls, I said ok."
He then tossed aside the Disney dolls and held up one of the LOL dolls, adding "I'm upset!"
The Punk-Rocker Look Didn't Land For Johnson
The first LOL doll in question has neon green and black hair and is wearing a fishnet bodysuit with black shorts and a cropped black shirt.
The doll is supposed to be a trendy punk-rocker, but the father was less than impressed by the ensemble.
Multiple Dolls In The Collection Have A Similar Style
Johnson continued: "Look at these dolls they're giving our babies. What is we doing? She thick with it and everything, she got pantyhose on.”
The father originally assumed that it was only one doll dressed as what he deemed inappropriate, but upon further investigation, he learned that all four of the LOL Surprise! dolls included in the box were at least showing their legs or stomach (Gasp!).
Some Commenters Pointed Out They're Supposed To Be Dressed Up
The father asks "What are we doing to our children y'all?" while holding up the dolls he had bought for his daughter.
He adds that he had initially told his daughter to find the doll's clothing because he thought that it was a dress-them-yourself kind of toy. Some commenters suggested that the dolls do in fact come with different outfits to dress them in.
Johnson Doubled Down On His Warning Message
With text captions on the screen warning, "Be careful about what you expose your children to," Johnson doubles down on the message.
He says "We got to be careful what we're giving our children." He also explained that his daughter truly loves the toys, and he doesn't think it would be fair to take them away from her.
The Viral Video Has Over 40K Comments
Johnson's video has now been viewed over 12 million times and racked up over 43k comments from parents and people worldwide.
While some commenters echoed Johnson's concerns, not everyone is on board with the father's opinion about the dolls' clothing.
Some Parents Agreed With The Father's Rant
Many parents weighed in to say they were also concerned by the style and clothing on the dolls.
One mom even admitted she refuses to buy them for her daughters.
Other Commenters Drew Attention To A Bigger Problem
Some users were less concerned about the outfits on the dolls, and more about the unrealistic body standards they are promoting.
The dolls are notoriously curvy, reminiscent of the Bratz era of dolls.
It Ultimately Comes Down To Being A Conscious Consumer And Depends On The Parent
On the flip side, some commenters weighed in to share their opinion on the reality of people using fashion to express themselves in everyday life.
Also, are female dolls supposed to wear full-coverage outfits while Ken Doll gets to strut around topless? Come on.
