Man Freaks Out When Ex-Wife Exposes His Plan To Abandon Children Post-Divorce
Divorce is complicated for every person involved, especially when there are children in the family.
An anonymous mom has asked the internet for advice about dealing with her ex-husband who made a shocking confession post-divorce.
A Viral Reddit Post Details The Whole Story
A now-viral post shared to the popular r/AmITheA**hole thread has people weighing in on whether one mom was wrong for telling her ex-mother-in-law the truth about her son after the divorce.
The post quickly gained thousands of responses.
The Couple Were Married In Their Teens
The original poster (OP) establishes that she and her ex-husband got married in their teens (aged 15 and 17) and had a 30-year-long relationship leading up to this point.
The first line says: "I (45f) am currently divorced from my ex Thomas (47m) of 30 years."
OP's Ex-Husband Said He No Longer Wanted To See Their Children
The couple went ahead with the divorce and things were pretty much settled until Thomas made a painful confession.
He told OP that he didn't want to be in their children's lives anymore.
The Divorce Was Finalized And The Papers Were Signed
OP asked Thomas what she should tell the kids and he answered, "Whatever you think is best I don't care. I don't want to parent anymore."
With the lawyer present, they were able to reach an agreement and everything was "signed with no fuss."
OP's Ex-MIL Was Under The Impression That OP Was Keeping The Kids Away From Their Father
Everything seemed settled until a few weeks later when OP was contacted by her ex-MIL, Denise, the children's grandmother.
Denise was under the impression that it was actually OP who was preventing Thomas from seeing his children.
Allegedly The Ex-Husband Was Distraught His Kids Were Being Kept From Him
Not only that, but Denise explained how Thomas said that he really missed his children and how OP was a "petty b***h for taking full custody."
Apparently, Thomas had been "crying for days" about not being able to see his kids.
OP Decided To Set The Record Straight
OP quickly explained her side of the story but her ex-MIL wasn't easily convinced. Denise was adamant that her son wouldn't lie about his own children.
At this point, OP decided to call Thomas and put it on speakerphone with his mother in the room, adding, "He didn't know she and I were meeting that day."
She Called Her Ex-Husband On Speakerphone
The phone call with her ex-husband went about as poorly as expected, but this time his own mother was in the room to hear it.
OP pushed a little further to prove that she really wasn't the one keeping the children from Thomas.
"My Family Already Thinks The Kids Aren't Mine"
The mom asked, "What about holidays and birthdays we never discussed, and your family might want to see them?"
But her ex-husband sharply responded, "My family already thinks the kids aren't mine so it doesn't matter." OP then asked specifically about his mother who was listening in.
The Grandma Was Surprised But "Straight-Faced" Hearing Her Son Speak
Thomas told OP that his mom loves him more than her grandchildren so it wouldn't be an issue for her to stop seeing the kids.
Throughout the phone call, Denise remained "straight-faced and nodded at everything." The shocked grandmother then asked OP to leave and said she would be in touch.
The MIL Ended Up Kicking Her Son (OP's Ex-Husband) Out Of Her House
The very same day, OP got a phone call from her ex-husband.
He told her that he had been kicked out of his mom's house and basically disgraced from the family over his decision to abandon his children.
OP Wondered If They Were In The Wrong
His reaction to being caught in the lie about a non-existent custody battle was to take it out on OP.
To make matters worse, one of OP's friends took the side of her ex-husband and said that she shouldn't have told her former MIL the truth.
Commenters Supported The Newly Single Mom
Most Redditors were quick to side with OP and point out that it was a bad situation all around but that she wasn't in the wrong.
The most upvoted response said, "You had the right to set the record straight."
While OP Was Voted Not The A-Hole, Her Ex-Husband Didn't Get The Same Treatment
Another Redditor pointed out the irony of the whole situation.
OP was unanimously ruled not the a-hole, but it doesn't change the fact that she's stuck dealing with the real a-hole of the situation—her ex-husband.
